Hip Impingement And Chiropractic Treatment

Hip impingement or “Femoroacetabular Impingement” (FAI), refers to friction between the ball and socket of the hip joint which resultantly damages the joint. It is characterized by pain in the groin particularly after walking or sitting for a long period of time. People in such a case often find it difficult to flex their hip beyond a certain angle.

If treatment is not given at the right time, it can lead to hip osteoarthritis. Chiropractic treatment is believed to be the best natural and effective non-surgical method of treatment.

Types Of Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI)

  • Cam Impingement – It is caused due to deformity of the ball at the top of femur.
  • Pincer Impingement – Occurs due to deformity of the socket and is more common in females.
  • Combined Impingement – It is a combination of the above two types.

How To Diagnose

  • X-Ray
  • CT Scan
  • MRI

Chiropractic Treatment For Hip Impingement

  • Mobilization – The affected area is gently mobilized by stretching and moving the muscles and joints. This is done to increase the range of motion which has been restricted due to the deformed ball and socket joint in the femur.
  • Natural Agents – Chiropractors believe in going the natural and least painful way when it comes to joint related issues. Heat and ice therapy can be used to reduce pain caused due to hip impingement.
  • Exercises - Exercise is a core part of treatment for this condition. Strengthening and therapeutic exercises are generally advised to the patients.
  • Massage – Soft and slow massages can speed up recovery. It not only improves blood circulation in the troubled area but also reduces swelling and inflammation.
  • Dietary Guidelines – After a couple of sessions with a chiropractor, the patient is given dietary guidelines that can help in maintaining good joint health in future. Supplements might also be recommended.
  • Manual Manipulation - High speed arm thrusts are performed on the affected area to reduce pain and relax the nerves.
  • Ultrasound – Ultrasound therapy is used for giving deep heat therapy to soft tissues and joints in the hip area. It is extremely relaxing and soothing for the joints.
  • Cold Laser Therapy – Laser therapy works by transforming light energy into bio-chemical energy. This helps in reducing swelling and inflammation in the hip joint. Circulation in the joints is greatly improved leading to relief from pain.
