by Administrator 12. April 2012 13:03

Constipation is defined as a condition in which there is a decrease in bowel movements, usually less than three a week, and difficulty in passing stools. Stools are usually hard and small in patients with constipation. The condition can be associated with bloating and abdominal discomfort.

  • Dehydration
  • Diet with low fiber
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Holding stools despite urge to defecate
  • Travel
  • Other diseases like irritable bowel syndrome, hypothyroidism, cystic fibrosis, and other neurological and metabolic disorders.
  • Mental conditions like stress and depression
  • Certain medications like hydrocodone, meperedine, phenytoin, valproic acid, amitriptyline, aspirin, acetaminophen etc.

Chiropractic care:

Even though most cases of constipation can be treated by making certain lifestyle modifications, like increasing dietary fiber intake, increasing physical activity, drinking at least eight glasses of water a day etc., some severe cases can be chronic, and can require medical intervention.

Chiropractic care for constipation has been found to be efficient in treating long-term constipation that was not curable by any other mode of treatment. The treatment focuses on the lower part of the spine, in which the celiac ganglion connect. These nerves are responsible for supplying signals to the gallbladder, stomach, small intestine, spleen, liver, kidney and colon. Pressure on these nerves can result in constipation.

Chiropractic methods are used for spinal adjustment in this region, as well as in upper cervical and cranial regions. Stimulation of these ganglion results in the restoration of their function, which is to push stool out from the anus. Chiropractic care also works in increasing the physical activity of the patient, which is a major cause of constipation in patients with sedentary lifestyles.

The following case studies illustrates the efficacy of chiropractic care in the treatment of constipation:

  • The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics published the case of a young boy who had been experiencing chronic constipation since birth, and was found to have a subluxation in his pelvis, upon chiropractic examination. Adjustment of the subluxation, followed by massaging along the course of the colon, resulted in immediate improvement in his condition, and he experienced 3 bowel movements in 4 days, without any discomfort. After a few chiropractic sessions, he was reported to have recovered from the condition completely.
  • A study published in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics, shows that an infant who was suffering from constipation due to a broken left clavicle during birth experienced relief with cervical adjustments using chiropractic techniques.
  • According to a case study published in Chiropractic Technique, a spine and cranial adjustment relieved a 7-month-old girl's chronic constipation.
