Chiropratic Treatment For Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is a form of inflammatory bowel's disease (IBD) which can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract. Some of the most common symptoms of the disease are diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, and abdominal pain. Some patients also develop skin rashes, eye-inflammation, and other symptoms that are unrelated to digestion.  A combination of environmental and hereditary factors causes the disease.

There is no known cure for the disease, and its management usually involves remission, which is followed by relapse in most cases. Patients are usually advised to make certain dietary modifications and may need to undergo long-term medication including strong antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, which might have severe side effects.

Recent studies have established the efficacy of chiropractic treatment for Crohn's disease as an effective alternative therapy for the disease. This treatment is based on the finding that the underlying cause of the disease might be spinal misalignments and subluxations in some patients, which when corrected, can provide significant relief from the symptoms.

According to a research published in the November 2002 issue of the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research (JVSR), 12 of the 17 patients with Crohn's disease who underwent chiropractic treatment for the disease were found to have vertebral subluxations, and experienced complete remission of the disease. The remaining 5 patients also reported alleviation of symptoms.

The direct impact of vertebral subluxations on the body's immune system is believed to be the underlying cause of the disease, which is classified as an autoimmune disorder. By correcting these subluxations, the immune system's functionality is restored, leading to long-term and stable remission of Crohn's disease.

This reaffirms the basic principle of chiropractic treatment, according to which an abnormality in the nervous system underlies the cause of nearly every disease. In Crohn's disease, the nerves that are affected are those supplying the digestive system. When the spinal dislocation is corrected, the function of these nerves is restored, helping in the treatment of the disease.

Along with providing relief from the symptoms of Crohn's disease, chiropractors also help in improving the overall functionality of the body, including the patient's posture. Most patients experience a boost in their energy levels following a few sessions, hence relieving them from the fatigue associated with the disease. Best of all, since this mode of treatment focuses on treating the disease from its root cause; the chances of relapse are significantly lowered.
