Chiropractic Care for Irritable Infants

A recent issue of the Canadian Chiropractic Association Journal published a case regarding an infant diagnosed with gastro esophageal reflux disease. The patient was given chiropractic treatment and notable improvements were observed in her condition after the chiropractic care sessions.

The mother of a 3-month old girl reported that the infant had symptoms like excessive intestinal gas, frequent vomiting, interrupted sleep, difficulty in breastfeeding, excessive crying and plagiocephaly. Previously, she had been treated with Prilosec medication. The patient was also diagnosed of gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) when she was 2 months old.

Observations by the infant’s mother also included fussy behavior during breastfeeding and high-pitched crying and vomiting after feedings. She also made an arching motion and become rigid when held or picked up. The only way to breastfeed the child was to walk and bounce her.

When examined by the chiropractor, the following symptoms were revealed:

  1. Great agitation and painful, excessive crying
  2. Positive suckling reflex without response to stimulus.
  3. Slight left lateral flexion of the cervical spine
  4. Flattening of the patient’s right occiput
  5. Moderate blistering on lower lip
  6. Rigidity and discomfort in abdomen

After the physical examination, it was determined that the infant has spinal dysfunctions at the atlas and 4th thoracic vertebrae. With the consent of her mother, the patient was provided chiropractic care in the form of high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrust type spinal manipulative therapy. Pediatric SMT and Craniosacral Therapy was also used to correct her problems.

Consequently, the patient’s mother reported that the child was able to feed from both breasts in a sitting position. Her sleeping time and quality also improved after initial treatment. After the 4th chiropractic visit, the mother took her daughter off Prilosec and also noted reduced vomiting and crying after the 7th visit. Long term follow up revealed that all the symptoms were resolved within 3 months of chiropractic care.
