The thyroid gland and the hormones produces by it control almost all the metabolic processes of the body. The disorders related to thyroid can vary from a harmless enlarged gland or goiter to the life threatening or severe cancer. In almost all the thyroid problems, the thyroid hormones are produced in an abnormal amount. Depending on this, the thyroid problems can be of two types.

  • Hypothyroidism: a condition in which thyroid hormones are produced in an insufficient amount. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include cold feet and hands, weakness fatigue, low body temperature, weight gain even after anorexia, irregularities in menstrual cycle, slow pulse rate, low sex drive, poor memory, low BP and many more.
  • Hyperthyroidism: a condition marked by an excess of thyroid hormone. Common symptoms are increased appetite, weight loss, irritability, nervousness, restlessness, hyperactivity, increased heart palpitations, double vision, increased sweating, shakiness, tremors, protruding eyes.

Researchers have suggested that some of the cases of thyroid disorders are a result of the malfunctioning of brain and spinal cord nerves that are responsible to control the production of the thyroid hormone. Either the hormone is produce in excess or is insufficient; both the conditions can be the result of a fault between the spinal cord, pituitary, thyroid and the brain and can be caused due to a trauma to the head or neck.

Most of the people who suffer from the thyroid disease recall particular traumas like falls, auto accidents or head injuries that occurred before the thyroid symptoms appeared. However, some people can’t recall any such event. A thorough examination of the upper cervical bone is extremely important in each and every case to judge if there is an injury in the upper cervical area and if the chiropractic care can be of help to the patient.
