Subluxation refers to the misalignment of the spinal joints (vertebrae) which interfere with the brain and body’s nerve communication leading to functional loss. A subluxation can occur at any age and is usually caused by physical toxins and stress.

Causes Of Subluxation

  • Trauma from physical impact (sports injuries, sleeping in the wrong position, incorrect lifting etc.)
  • Toxins from a poor diet
  • Stress

Subluxation causes pressure and stress on the spinal nerves, muscles and blood vessels resulting in an imbalance of normal processes of the body. Untreated subluxation then results in further damage and eventual degeneration of the nerves. Visiting a licensed chiropractor can help in reducing the effects of subluxations and maintaining good health.

Chiropractors specialize in correcting subluxations. They re-align the misaligned vertebrae by restoring them to correct position in the spinal column. This is done manually. The process is known as spinal adjustment.

Phases Of Subluxation

Phase 1: It affects the normal curve of the spine and usually causes a reverse curve in the neck. No pain is associated with this phase. Spinal adjustment is highly recommended at this stage.

Phase 2: It has the symptoms of the first phase coupled with reduced range of motion in the affected area. It leads to the build-up of calcium deposits on certain areas of the spine. One starts to feel stiff and achy. A significant improvement can be made with chiropractic adjustment in this phase.

Phase 3: Everything in the previous phases get even worse. Decreased disc space and abnormal curvatures are noticed. Chiropractic reconstructive care for a stretch of 2.5 to 3.5 years is recommended for subluxations in this phase.

Phase 4: A huge amount of neurological damage is noticed. The disc spaces appear blurred and there are huge calcium changes. Severely restricted range of motion is seen in this phase. Reconstruction is usually not possible at this stage of subluxation. Chiropractic care has been shown to bring about positive changes in this phase too. With chiropractic care, symptoms significantly improve, mobility increases and the quality of life is much better.

Chiropractors apply pressure to the spine using their hands. The pressure is applied in a specific direction or towards a specific location. The manual thrust helps in aligning the vertebrae and increases its mobility.

A chiropractor may also resort to treating the subluxation with the help of special instruments. The instruments help in detecting the subluxation and adjusting the spine. However, chiropractic adjustments are a painless and non-intrusive, natural way of treating subluxations.
