A cough that persists for a long time is known as chronic cough. While chronic cough is not a disease in itself, it might be a symptom of an underlying medical condition. It is more than an annoyance, disturbs sleep and keeps you feeling exhausted. In some cases, chronic cough can result in vomiting, lightheadedness and can even cause rib fractures. Chronic cough can last more than 8 weeks in adults and around 4 weeks in children.

Chronic cough can result from a number of factors which can be Sinusitis, Asthma, tobacco use, respiratory tract infections and acid reflux (causing the backflow of stomach acid that irritates the throat) besides other causes. Chronic cough can either be dry, in which no mucus is produced and it may be caused by a viral infection, or wet cough, that produces mucus (sputum) and may be result of a bacterial infection. A chronic cough results in runny or stuffy nose, hoarseness, frequent throat clearing and sore throat, shortness of breath or heartburn and sour taste in the mouth. The cough that interferes with your work, sleep and social life while also lingering on for weeks needs immediate medical attention.

How Chiropractic Care helps Chronic Cough

Cough is a reflexive action of the body to get rid of unwanted junk. Since the autonomic nervous system is in control of it, if the nervous system is out of balance it is unable to get rid of the toxic substances and the immunity system of the body is compromised. These occur as a result of vertebral subluxations of the spine. Subluxations are minor misalignments of the spine that cause nerve interference and if the nerves in spine get stressed and have muscle imbalance, nerve interference can cause the nervous system to be unable to communicate with the immune system.

Chiropractors treat these misalignments using spinal manipulations that help in relieving the stress and help in reducing postural and nerve pressure from the spine. It lets the spinal cord and the nervous system work optimally to eliminate any condition that causes cough. These adjustments are also helpful in improving mental stamina, concentration, anxiety and hyperactivity.

Chiropractors cure the reason behind a chronic cough and help in improving the quality of life of the patients dealing with it. A few common conditions like poor posture, sinus problems, frequent colds, weakness or fatigue etc can be caused due to a misaligned spine and can be corrected in a few adjustments by visiting a chiropractor.
