Muscle spasm is an involuntary contraction of the muscles that causes shortening of the muscle. It is felt like a cramp or the tightness in the muscle. Muscle spasms are not always painful. Muscle spasms when painful are felt like sudden onset of unpleasant and painful sensation in the muscle. Muscle spasms are common in back, neck arms and leg muscles.

Causes Of Muscle Spasm

  • Prolonged or excessive exercises can cause fatigue and energy depletion. During prolonged exercise, the muscle is unable to relax and thus cramps occur.
  • Dehydration – Loss of water and salts from the body in conditions like vomiting, Diarrhoea or excessive sweating can cause muscle cramps.
  • Injury or trauma to the muscle also leads to spasm
  • Neuromuscular diseases like Multiple sclerosis.
  • Spinal injury

Symptoms Of Muscle Spasm

  • The most common muscles that are affected are calf muscles, back and front of the thigh (Hamstrings and quadriceps), feet, hands, arms and abdominal muscles.
  • Muscle cramps can be varying from a low intensity cramp that may only cause slight twitch or tic.
  • Muscle spasm may also lead to severe pain in the muscle
  • Tightness in the muscle
  • Sudden onset of unpleasant painful sensation in the muscle
  • Fatigue in the muscle

Chiropractic Treatment In Muscle Spasm

  • Stretching of the muscle
  • Massage
  • Deep heating to the muscle followed by gentle exercises
  • If the spasm is caused by injury or pathology in the joint, joint manipulative therapies may help
  • Soft tissue manipulation
  • Strengthening exercises

Proper Chiropractic care can offset Muscle Spasm effectively.
