Chiropractic Showed Improved Results For Infantile Colic

Infantile Colic or simply Colic refers to a situation, where a newly born baby cries frequently or screams for extended hours without any specific reason. This is more commonly found in breastfed and bottle-fed babies and usually gets noticed in the first two weeks after birth. The baby usually cries for more than 3 hours a day and spits up after feeding. The Colic may be caused because the baby’s nervous system is immature, swallows air while feeding and has allergies to some food like milk. The fussiness of crying is alarming for both the parents and the physicians. Therefore, the scientists have always tried to find out how Infantile Colic could be cured.

To know what could be the proper treatment of Colic, scientists at National Health Service in Ballerup in Copenhagen, Denmark conducted a research or study on 50 infants which were diagnosed with Colic. Half of the infants were administered a drug called dimethicon while the rest of them were given Chiropractic treatment. In the study of 50 infants, it was found that the group which was administered drug showed bad results. It was found that after 8 to 10 day of study, the infants who were given Chiropractic therapy improved to 2.7 hours of less crying and the infants on which drugs were administered showed one hour of less crying.

The above mentioned research study was published in December 1998 issue of Country Living's Healthy Living. The article also focused on a case study where a mom whose baby was suffering from Colic describes how her baby got cured with six sessions of 20 minutes with a Chiropractor. This was proved by another recent study conducted in South Africa, where a group of infants who received Chiropractic care recovered upto 93% within the two-week period and Colic was not repeated in any one of them.

These studies around the globe show that Chiropractic therapy is far more useful than using dimethicon drugs to treat Colic in new born babies. Chiropractic Care for Irritable Infants

by Administrator 5. July 2010 12:14

A recent issue of the Canadian Chiropractic Association Journal published a case regarding an infant diagnosed with gastro esophageal reflux disease. The patient was given chiropractic treatment and notable improvements were observed in her condition after the chiropractic care sessions.

The mother of a 3-month old girl reported that the infant had symptoms like excessive intestinal gas, frequent vomiting, interrupted sleep, difficulty in breastfeeding, excessive crying and plagiocephaly. Previously, she had been treated with Prilosec medication. The patient was also diagnosed of gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) when she was 2 months old.

Observations by the infant’s mother also included fussy behavior during breastfeeding and high-pitched crying and vomiting after feedings. She also made an arching motion and become rigid when held or picked up. The only way to breastfeed the child was to walk and bounce her.

When examined by the chiropractor, the following symptoms were revealed:

  1. Great agitation and painful, excessive crying
  2. Positive suckling reflex without response to stimulus.
  3. Slight left lateral flexion of the cervical spine
  4. Flattening of the patient’s right occiput
  5. Moderate blistering on lower lip
  6. Rigidity and discomfort in abdomen

After the physical examination, it was determined that the infant has spinal dysfunctions at the atlas and 4th thoracic vertebrae. With the consent of her mother, the patient was provided chiropractic care in the form of high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrust type spinal manipulative therapy. Pediatric SMT and Craniosacral Therapy was also used to correct her problems.

Consequently, the patient’s mother reported that the child was able to feed from both breasts in a sitting position. Her sleeping time and quality also improved after initial treatment. After the 4th chiropractic visit, the mother took her daughter off Prilosec and also noted reduced vomiting and crying after the 7th visit. Long term follow up revealed that all the symptoms were resolved within 3 months of chiropractic care.
