Drop Foot is the inability to lift the front part of the foot while the heel is kept on the ground. This condition happens due to weakening of the nerves and muscles that allow for smooth movement of the ankle and the toes. As a result the foot drags along the ground while walking and this condition can go unnoticed for a long time.  Drop Foot can cause loss of function of the foot, pain, weakness and numbness. People who suffer from this condition tend to lift their knee higher than usual to avoid dragging the foot. This exaggerated or high stepping walk is also called Steppage Gait or Foot Drop Gait.

Drop Foot is not a disease but a symptom of an underlying problem. Some of the causes that can lead to a Drop Foot are:

  • Nerve Injury:  Drop Foot is often associated with injuries to the Peroneal nerve which are branches of sciatic nerves that run along the outside of the lower leg and branch into the ankle, foot and toes. This nerve is responsible for transmitting signals to the ankle, foot and toes for movement, and is prone to damage because it sits close to the surface. Certain conditions like sports injuries, diabetes, childbirth, hip or knee replacement surgery etc may result in damaging these nerves and causing Drop Foot.
  • Brain or spinal disorders:  Various conditions like Stroke, Cerebral Palsy and multiple Sclerosis can also contribute to Drop Foot.
  • Muscle disorders:  The muscles in legs may get damaged or compressed due to muscular Dystrophy or Amyoptrophic Lateral Sclerosis and may cause Drop Foot.

How chiropractic treatment can help:

Spinal Adjustments is the most effective technique for treating Drop Foot. A chiropractor relieves the nerves that carry signals, of pressure and this spinal adjustment helps in mobilization of the particular joint and free flows the fluids in and around the joint. The compression of the nerves can be eliminated in a few sessions to provide complete relief from the problem. Besides spinal adjustments, gentle massage techniques, therapies like neuromuscular therapy, trigger point massage and stretching techniques can also be used in chiropractic treatment to treat this condition.
