Chiropractic Care for Osteoarthritis of Knees

by Administrator 16. January 2010 11:37

What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis affecting manly people who are above 50 years of age. Osteoarthritis is a painful, degenerative and progressive disease of the joints, wherein there is a gradual loss of articular cartilage from the joints. Knees are the most common joint affected by Osteoarthritis.

Causes of the Osteoarthritis of Knees
Osteoarthritis mainly causes disruption of the cartilage of the knees joints. Cartilage covers the ends of the bones in the joints (articular surfaces of the bones) and helps in smooth motion and shock absorption. When cartilage is disrupted there occurs more friction between the bones during motion. This causes thickening of ends of the bone and as a result bone spurs may form.
Some of the causes for the disruption of cartilage in Osteoarthritis of Knees can be:

  • Genetic susceptibility
  • Aging Process
  • Joint injury
  • Long Period of inactivity
  • Being Overweight
  • Weak Muscles

Muscle Spasm and Chiropractic Care

by Administrator 5. January 2010 07:04

Muscle spasm is an involuntary contraction of the muscles that causes shortening of the muscle. It is felt like a cramp or the tightness in the muscle. Muscle spasms are not always painful. Muscle spasms when painful are felt like sudden onset of unpleasant and painful sensation in the muscle. Muscle spasms are common in back, neck arms and leg muscles.

Causes Of Muscle Spasm

  • Prolonged or excessive exercises can cause fatigue and energy depletion. During prolonged exercise, the muscle is unable to relax and thus cramps occur.
  • Dehydration – Loss of water and salts from the body in conditions like vomiting, Diarrhoea or excessive sweating can cause muscle cramps.
  • Injury or trauma to the muscle also leads to spasm
  • Neuromuscular diseases like Multiple sclerosis.
  • Spinal injury

Symptoms Of Muscle Spasm

  • The most common muscles that are affected are calf muscles, back and front of the thigh (Hamstrings and quadriceps), feet, hands, arms and abdominal muscles.
  • Muscle cramps can be varying from a low intensity cramp that may only cause slight twitch or tic.
  • Muscle spasm may also lead to severe pain in the muscle
  • Tightness in the muscle
  • Sudden onset of unpleasant painful sensation in the muscle
  • Fatigue in the muscle

Chiropractic Treatment In Muscle Spasm

  • Stretching of the muscle
  • Massage
  • Deep heating to the muscle followed by gentle exercises
  • If the spasm is caused by injury or pathology in the joint, joint manipulative therapies may help
  • Soft tissue manipulation
  • Strengthening exercises

Proper Chiropractic care can offset Muscle Spasm effectively.

Chiropractic Care For Addicts

by Administrator 27. December 2009 08:12

An article posted in Psychology Today Online (July 14th 2006) with a sub title "Beating addiction may take an extra nudge from the chiropractor", focused on how chiropractic care works towards de-addiction of addicts. The article was about an individual undergoing addiction treatment therepy with Exodus Addiction Treatment Center in Florida. The center had a much higher success rate in comparison to other national treatment centers. The higher success rate was attributed to chiropractic care given to patients along with normal addiction treatment procedure.

According to article, chiropractic care is a part of therapy for addiction treatment at Exodus Addiction Treatment Center and one of the patients recognized chiropractic care to be majorly responsible for successful de-addiction therapy. It was mentioned that chiropractic care stimulates spine which has direct connection with nervous system and neurotransmitters. When a patient is administered chiropractic treatment, spine with connection to nervous system produces a physical and mental state of well being. Chiropractic treatment was designed to correct “subluxations” thereby returning the normal nerve functions.

Another study published in the same article referring Molecular Psychiatry journal showed the reason behind success of Exodus treatment center where three groups were compared during the treatment course. One group was given chiropractic along with normal treatment, while the other two groups were treated without chiropractic care. The two groups without chiropractic care showed approximately 55% completion of addiction program (roughly around the national average) while the group with treatment along with chiropractic care showed a complete 100% completion of addiction program.

According to Dr. Jay Holder chiropractic treatment for addiction is not a new form of treatment but only assists patients to take full benefits of current treatment procedure.

Chiropractic care is one of the remarkable ways to rejuvenate our body system to induce a feeling of well being. Various issues related to body and mind can interfere with daily activities. Chiropractic treatment is one of the best solutions for overall well being.

Importance Of Chiropractic Care For New Born Baby

by Administrator 30. November 2009 06:35

Delivery is a very traumatic experience for the child especially in case of a natural birth. The pressure exerted on the baby while being pushed through the birth canal can leave his body out of alignment. This is one of major concerns of most American parents who consult chiropractic doctors.

How can this misalignment affect the baby? It has been scientifically proved that these misalignments can cause irritability, colic and feeding related problems in infants. Chiropractic care is perhaps the only naturally treatments that can relieve your child from these ailments and thus help them lead a healthy life.

Another question which most of us may pose is regarding the necessity of a chiropractic doctor. Chiropractors are professionals capable of diagnosing and treating subluxation. Subluxation occurs due to displacement of one or more vertebrae in the spinal cord. This indirectly affects the nervous system that transmits nerve impulses to various parts of the body. Due to lack of proper transmission of nerve impulses, your body will not be able to function optimally.

How can Subluxation be diagnosed? During the process of delivery, the body of the baby should be flexible and rotate while finding its way out through the birth canal. Although birth process is completely natural, it can adversely affect the cervical vertebra due to misalignment. This if unattended could result in feeding problems, fussiness, colic, or sleep disturbances in the short run and can even damage child’s nervous system in the long run.

Only an experienced and specially trained chiropractic doctor will be able to identify these symptoms. So, the best thing to do is to visit a chiropractic doctor as he alone is capable of performing gentle adjustments as simple as the touch of a finger to rectify Subluxation.

If you are looking for the best treatment that can help your child lead a normal and healthy life, then chiropractic care is the best solution. This gentle and natural treatment is capable of making a significant difference in your child’s life.

Chiropractic Care for Pregnancy

by Administrator 25. November 2009 05:32

On June 13th 2004, “Pregnancy Today” magazine also popular as “journal for parents to be” published a story written by Patti Larson a mother and also an author who shares her experiences during pregnancy and the need for chiropractic care. She begins the story by giving out her personal experiences, the emotions experienced by her and her husband when they first realised that she was pregnant.

Being a woman in her mid 30’s, she shares her concerns and queries in the form of the following questions: From when will morning sickness start, how long will a woman be able to continue with her job? Is it possible to deliver a baby with little pain? She also tells that her diet and sleeping habits were good and confesses that though she had plans, she was unable to follow proper exercise schedule.

She also states that chiropractic care has helped her to overcome tiredness, aches, stress due to increasing body weight and changes due to hormonal imbalances. She further adds by saying that regular visits to chiropractic doctor prior to pregnancy have helped her a lot. She also states that Chiropractic doctors have assured her that she could visit them whenever she required any help.

Her Chiropractic doctor, Dr Jeff Ptak in Santa Monica, explains how chiropractic care has yielded such good results during her pregnancy. He says that chiropractic care tackles the functioning of nervous system. He explains that if the nervous system is not overly stressed by factors like physical, emotional or chemical, body will continue to work as per the genetic plan. But, a stressful birth would leave all parties stressed unless the nervous system stress is cleared. Chiropractors prepare the body to deal with stress so that expecting mothers and new mothers can handle their children without any difficulty.

Leslie Stewart an authorized nurse-midwife also shares her opinion by saying that chiropractic care can help women deal with labour. She also states that in few cases where women did not experience labour even past due dates, this treatment has induced labour naturally.

Patti Larson, the author of the article has not only continued chiropractic care during her pregnancy but has also followed it after the birth of her daughter Madeline. Towards the end of the article she says that Madeline received regular adjustments after the second week after her birth. This has prevented her from falling prey to colic, ear infections, cold and many other symptoms during the first year of her birth when most children were vulnerable to these kinds of illnesses. Although people shy away from asked to consult a chiropractic doctor, they accept that Madeline is one of the most active and smart child they have ever come across. Though they feel that I am lucky, I feel that the same thrill can be experienced by all those who adopt chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Advice For Pregnancy

by Administrator 11. November 2009 14:30

Weight gain, bloating and nausea are the most common problems faced by women during pregnancy. But the joy and beauty of motherhood can make you forget all these pains and sufferings.

Many new mothers confirm that the muscle strain is unbearable and also troublesome. Weight gain is very common during pregnancy. This accompanied by increased stress on the body due to baby inside, can cause a lot of discomfort. Recent studies have shown that more than fifty percent of women tend to complain of pain in the lower back during the later stages of pregnancy. The main reason being, in the later stages of pregnancy, pressure caused by baby’s head falls on women’s back, legs and buttocks.

Dr Jerome McAndrews of American Chiropractic Association states that due to the presence of baby in the womb during pregnancy, the centre of gravity of women shifts towards pelvis thereby increasing the pressure on her joints. The posterior section of women has more depth than a man to enable her to carry the baby. In spite of this body structure, women experience great stress on their pelvis during their pregnancy. Dr McAndrews explains that as the baby grows in size, further weight is displaced on her thus leading to twist in the curvature of her back wherein more stressed is put on her spine. In order to make up for these changes, the curvature of upper portion of the spine also increases.

It is very common that hormones get released during the time of pregnancy in order to relax the ligaments attached to the pelvic bones. These natural changes occur with a view to adapt the growing baby. However, these changes may lead to postural imbalances in which women may be subject to uncoordinated slips and falls.

What can be done?

Dr McAndrews and ACA have put forward few recommendations in order to relieve women from discomforts during pregnancy.

• Proper exercise can help in strengthening your muscles and avoid uneasiness. Minimum exercise including mild stretches is to be done at least three times a week. Even though you are not used to exercising, it is high time you take up some physical activity by consulting your doctor.

• Stationary exercises like walking, swimming and cycling are advisable as they do not involve any bouncy movement and are also harmless. Jogging is also harmless for women who were devoted runners before getting pregnant. However, it needs to be done under the strict surveillance of a doctor.

• Whatever be the exercise routine you have adopted, make sure that you do it on a flat surface in order to avoid any slips or falls. Also be sure that your heart rate is under control and does not exceed 140 beats per minute at any given point of time. It is also important that you do not do any workout continuously beyond 15 minutes. Avoid exercising the moment you notice any of these symptoms- vaginal bleeding, dizziness, nausea, weakness, blurred vision or increase in heart palpitations.

• Avoid heels and prefer only flat shoes. Heels not only cause inconvenience but create imbalances in your posture and cause shaky moments while walking. This is true especially in the later stages of pregnancy.

• You need to be careful while picking up children or heavy objects. Never bend from your waist, always bend from knees and avoid turning your head while lifting heavy objects. If possible keep away from picking up heavy objects.

• Try to lie on your left side while sleeping. This position ensures smooth and uninterrupted blood flow and helps your kidneys to wash out unwanted waste from your body. Remove pressure off your lower back by placing a pillow between both your knees. You can make use of a body pillow or pregnancy wedges if required.

• If you are an employee and your job needs you to sit before a system for long hours, then place your system in such a way that the top of the screen is below your eye level. Avoid sitting in one place continuously and place your legs on some elevation. If possible, take frequent breaks and every half an hour and take a small walk.

• Try to have some healthy snacks every 4 hours and in-between your main course. This keeps nausea off and prevents hunger. Healthy snacks include crackers, yogurt, bland foods high in carbohydrates and proteins. Morning sickness is another most common symptom that can occur anytime. So, ensure you keep some saltines with you.

• Folic acid supplements are highly recommended during pregnancy. These help in preventing neural tube birth defects similar to spina bifida. A minimum intake of 400 micrograms is recommended. Few doctors prescribe this to women who have given birth to children with similar deformities earlier. However, doctor’s advice needs to be taken before consuming this.

• Make sure you give your body proper rest. Don’t let your professional and personal life dominate you. Lie down and rest in case your feel tired and place your feet on some elevation at least for some time whenever you relax.

How can Chiropractic care help?

Consult your chiropractic doctor even before you become pregnant. This helps them in identifying any imbalances in the pelvis or for that matter any other region of the body. Timely advice can help you overcome discomforts during pregnancy or other neuro-musculoskeletal problem post delivery.

Several pregnant women have realised that chiropractic treatment have made them free from lower back pain which is most common during pregnancy. Latest studies have found that spinal manoeuvring does not cause any harm to the pregnant mother or her child. Chiropractic is a completely non-drug, non-surgical approach which is helpful to women who try to keep away from medication. Chiropractic doctors also offer several valuable suggestions on diet, exercise and ergonomic that helps in overcoming uneasiness during pregnancy.

Chiropractic care is also beneficial post childbirth. Two months post delivery, body gets back to its normal state. The ligaments that have relaxed during pregnancy begin to tighten. This is the perfect time for solving problems experienced during pregnancy due to improper lifting of heavy weights. More over this is the perfect time for getting issues related to muscle tension, headaches, rib discomfort, and shoulder problems as the upper and lower spine try to become normal.

Conservative Chiropractic Care Of Neck Pain And Neck Injury

by Administrator 22. October 2009 16:24

Neck pain can occur due to many reasons. Various day to day activities can cause severe neck pain. The neck pain can be very troublesome and can affect a patient’s efficiency to do tasks in normal daily routine.

Some of the most usual causes of neck pain are:

  • Daily Life Routine: Poor posture, obesity, stress or tension can cause neck pain which can get extended to back and arms. These are some of the most common causes for neck pain.
  • Injury and Accidents: Sudden and vigorous movement of neck or head due to injury/ accident is another major cause of neck pain. Car accidents, injury due to falling, injury while playing sports account for a good number of neck pain cases.
  • Aging: With natural aging, degenerative disorders like Spinal Stenosis, Osteoarthritis and degenerative disc diseases also affect the spine which in turn causes neck pain.

Neck Pain and Chiropractic Care

Research and studies have provided substantial evidence to encourage Chiropractic care for neck pain. According to literature review, published in March-April 2007 issue of the Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics, there is substantial evidence showing significant improvement in neck pain level following Chiropractic spinal manipulations. All trial groups subject to chiropractic care, reported substantial improvements in pain following chiropractic manipulations.

When you visit a Chiro-practitioner, they would perform tests and ask various questions about symptoms and remedies tried for neck pain. Questions like - Time of start of pain, Factors affecting pain levels, Any prior prescription or care taken by the patient, etc.  Chiro-practitioners also try to observe other physical aspects like posture, motion range, movements that causes pain, physical conditions to find out the root cause and to ascertain the correct treatment for neck pain. At times, Chiro-practitioners also perform X-Rays to ascertain the cause of pain. In rare cases, CT scans and EMG (electromyography) tests are done. They may also try to feel your spine with hands to check out the curvature and alignment. In case you are diagnosed with some organic disease or fracture, your chiro-practitioner will refer you to appropriate medical specialist.

Chiropractic Management of Migraines

by Administrator 5. October 2009 19:07

Cervical spine is believed to be connected with headache, dizziness and pain. Several studies have been conducted in recent years and have indicated tremendous improvement in patients suffering from Migraines. In a recent study nearly 64 subjects who were identified with migraine by IHS (International Headache Society) underwent various chiropractic adjustments at various chiropractic vertebral sub-luxations.

Another 64 subjects were attached to a control group and they received interferential therapy. This therapy involved placement of electrodes on each subject without any electricity being passed through it. This study included three stages and each stage extended for a period of two months. In the first stage data was collected before treatment, second stage includes the treatment period and post treatment data was collected in the third stage.

Each subject underwent six months period during which frequency, intensity, duration, disability, related symptoms and medication during each migraine episode were recorded. Subjects in the manipulation group established statistically note worthy improvement in migraine frequency, headache duration, disability and medication. Nearly 20% of the subjects reported tremendous reduction in migraine after 2 months of SMT while more than 50% reported improvement in severity of migraine.

All these results enhance previous evidence that suggest improvements in specific subjects following chiropractic manipulation. Nearly 80% of the subjects have stated stress to be the main reason for migraine. It also appears that chiropractic care effected physical condition related to stress and thus helped in reducing the effects of migraine.
