Chiropractic Care For Addicts

by Administrator 27. December 2009 08:12

An article posted in Psychology Today Online (July 14th 2006) with a sub title "Beating addiction may take an extra nudge from the chiropractor", focused on how chiropractic care works towards de-addiction of addicts. The article was about an individual undergoing addiction treatment therepy with Exodus Addiction Treatment Center in Florida. The center had a much higher success rate in comparison to other national treatment centers. The higher success rate was attributed to chiropractic care given to patients along with normal addiction treatment procedure.

According to article, chiropractic care is a part of therapy for addiction treatment at Exodus Addiction Treatment Center and one of the patients recognized chiropractic care to be majorly responsible for successful de-addiction therapy. It was mentioned that chiropractic care stimulates spine which has direct connection with nervous system and neurotransmitters. When a patient is administered chiropractic treatment, spine with connection to nervous system produces a physical and mental state of well being. Chiropractic treatment was designed to correct “subluxations” thereby returning the normal nerve functions.

Another study published in the same article referring Molecular Psychiatry journal showed the reason behind success of Exodus treatment center where three groups were compared during the treatment course. One group was given chiropractic along with normal treatment, while the other two groups were treated without chiropractic care. The two groups without chiropractic care showed approximately 55% completion of addiction program (roughly around the national average) while the group with treatment along with chiropractic care showed a complete 100% completion of addiction program.

According to Dr. Jay Holder chiropractic treatment for addiction is not a new form of treatment but only assists patients to take full benefits of current treatment procedure.

Chiropractic care is one of the remarkable ways to rejuvenate our body system to induce a feeling of well being. Various issues related to body and mind can interfere with daily activities. Chiropractic treatment is one of the best solutions for overall well being.

Frozen Shoulder & Chiropractic Care

by Administrator 21. December 2009 17:28

Frozen Shoulder is also known as Adhesive capsulitis. It is a condition that causes pain and restricted motion at shoulder joint.

Shoulder joint is the most mobile joint of the body and is also most susceptible to injuries and stiffness. During frozen shoulder the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint becomes contracted.

Causes of the frozen shoulder

  • Injury to the joint
  • Medical conditions like Diabetes, Arthritis
  • Soft tissue injuries like tendinitis, bursitis
  • Immobilization for ling time e.g., during fracture, paralysis.

Symptoms of frozen shoulder

Initial symptom of the frozen shoulder is pain. Sleep disturbance due to pain also common complaint. The pain in the joint leads to lack of motion in the joint and stiffness develops. Decrease in range of motion occurs afterwards. Patient is unable to move the arm through the full range of motion. In later stage the passive range of motion also decreases.

Diagnosis is generally made on the basis of symptoms and physical examination of the shoulder. X-ray or MRI can be done to rule out other medical conditions that may lead to pain and decrease in range of motion

Medical treatment includes nonsteroidal ant inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Chiropractic treatment for frozen shoulder

  • TENS – Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation (TENS). It is kind of electrical stimulation used to relieve pain in the joint.
  • Deep heating of the joint followed by range of motion exercises
  • Mobilization of the shoulder joint. Active mobilization includes mobilization exercises done by the patient. Passive mobilization is when the chiropractor is doing the mobilization of the stiff joint.
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises of the shoulder
  • Patients are instructed to follow up with regular exercises to avoid the reoccurrence of the condition.

by Administrator 15. December 2009 09:01

With increasing popularity of Chiropractic Care and recognition of its benefits, more and more sports teams and athletes are adopting chiropractic care. Chiropractic care is beneficial not only for injuries but for increased performance as well.

A study published in March/ April 2002 issue of Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, (JMPT) studied the usage of chiropractic care by NFL teams. The study included a survey with head trainers of 36 NFL teams, who had a minimum of 17 years of experience and were associated with their team for a period of last one year minimum. The survey showed that:

  • 45% of trainers have been treated by chiropractor themselves.
  • 31% teams had chiropractor as a part of staff.
  • 77% of trainers have referred athletes to chiropractors for treatment or evaluation.
  • 100% trainers agreed that some players use chiropractic care even though they have not been referred to one.

As a part of the survey, various other questions were asked from trainers. They were;

  • Should players be referred to chiropractors for spinal subluxations:

5% - strongly agree
48% - agree
24% - disagree
19% - have no opinion.

  • Is there a role for chiropractic doctor in NFL?

81%  - agree
5% - strongly agree
14% - have no opinion,

0% - disagree.

  • Is the role of the team physician and sport chiropractor same ?

It is not just that chiropractic treatment is popular among NFL teams. Chiropractic treatment is administered in almost all professional sports. Chiropractic care not only increases performance of sport persons, but also prevents injury.

Chiropractic Treatment For Back Pain Relief

by Administrator 6. December 2009 19:37

Chiropractic is an alternative medical system. It takes a different approach from standard medicine in treating health problems.

The basic concepts of chiropractic are:

  1. Your body has a powerful self-healing ability.
  2. Your body structure (mainly spine) and its function are related
  3. The goal of chiropractic therapy is to normalize this relationship

Chiropractic treatment for back pain relief

Accidents, falls, stress and countless other factors can result in a displacements or derangements of spinal column, causing irritation to spinal nerve roots. These irritations are often what cause malfunctions in human body. Chiropractic teaches that reducing or eliminating this irritation to spinal nerves can cause your body to operate more efficiently and more comfortably.Chiropractors use hands on spinal manipulation and other alternative treatments, the theory being that proper alignment of the body’s musculoskeletal structure, particularly the spine, will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication. Manipulation is used to restore mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury. Chiropractic treatment for back pain is based on the concept that restricted movement in the spine may lead to pain and reduced function. A chiropractor first takes a medical history, performs a physical examination, and may use lab tests or diagnostic imaging to determine if treatment is appropriate for your back pain.

The treatment chiropractor perform for back pain may include:

Spinal adjustment (manipulation) is one form of therapy chiropractors use to treat restricted spinal mobility.  During an adjustment, chiropractors use their hands to apply a controlled, sudden force to a joint- pushing it beyond its normal range of movement. The joint’s movement may be accompanied by a popping or cracking sound.
Physical therapy – Chiropractor may also incorporate physical therapy with the manipulation. Physical therapy involves advice on ergonomics, exercise, and proper body mechanics to prevent back pain. Chiropractors often give their patients stretching and strengthening exercises to do, as lengthening and strengthening various muscle groups may keep the spine in proper alignment.

Chiropractors may combine the use of spinal adjustments with several other treatments and approaches such as: Heat and ice, electrical stimulation, rest, massage, rehabilitation, counseling about diet, weight loss, and other lifestyle factors.
